My name is Sophia Zhuang and I have been given the opportunity to intern at LEAP this summer through my Public Health Solutions class at De Anza High School. My internship experience here has exposed me to a new aspect of what public health workers strive to change specifically in the Richmond community. Programs like LEAP collaborate with various partner organizations to eliminate the digital gap that separates our community with other communities in our district. My summer project was primarily centered around updating broken links and maps on the web-based program: LearnerWeb which is used by the adults who take the Digital Health training class. In addition, I did a sufficient amount of research on useful health phone apps that could potentially be implemented into the Digital Health curriculum as part of teaching adults how to use them as daily resource tools. In the midst of completing these assignments, I was able to assist in several Digital Health classes which helped adult learners improve upon their digital literacy.
From this internship experience, I have been introduced to the digital divide in the Richmond community and the goals that LEAP aims to achieve. There is a growing preference in society of obtaining health information through the Internet; however, low-income communities like Richmond are at an disadvantage of acquiring such important information. Furthermore, with the Internet providing so many connections and health benefits, there is a need for awareness of the digital gap that still exists in not only Richmond, but in many other communities as well. Organizations like LEAP provide support for individuals who find themselves in this group.
I'm very happy to be apart of this experience working with the other intern, Praseela Rai and our preceptor, Ellen Kersten to provide support for these adults in our community.
